Former Nigeria midfielder Mutiu Adepoju
and Malian ex-Sevilla striker Frederic Kanoute were the Africans named
alongside 14 other ex-stars – of the Spanish topflight – unveiled on
Tuesday as La Liga ambassadors in Madrid, Spain.
The others are ex-Real Madrid striker
Fernando Morientes, David Albelda, Michel Salgado, Carles Puyol, Vero
Boquete, Ismael Urzaiz, Cesar, Marcos Senna, Christian Karembeu, Milinko
Pantic, Gaizka Mendieta, Xavi Hernandez, Kiko and David Villa.
The star-studded group would be managed
by Fernando Sanz, La Liga global ambassador as well as the
organisation’s MENA Office Manager and Director of International
Projects.
“LaLiga Ambassadors programme has been a
resounding success. It’s the most successful of all the international
projects we’ve rolled out at La Liga and, dare I say, it’s even won us
admiration. It’s a real privilege to be part of this team,” Sanz said
during the ceremony.
He was joined at the event by La Liga
Nigeria Country Manager, Adepoju, who will be leading the line in
boosting the brand’s reach and prominence in southern Africa.
Adepoju had a distinguished career
playing in Spain with Real Madrid B side, Racing Santander and Real
Sociedad from 1989 to 2000 and is best remembered by Spanish fans for
his goal against La Roja in a 3-2 win for Nigeria at the 1998 World Cup
in France.
“It’s a great honour to be named amongst
these superstars as ambassadors of La Liga, one of the best leagues in
the world,” Adepoju told our correspondent.
